For more than three decades, the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS) has provided a structure and framework for its member schools and the families who seek to learn more about independent school education. The association’s member schools – day and boarding, rural, urban, and suburban – collectively enroll thousands of new students each year. The missions of these schools are as richly diverse as the population of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

 

Camp Twin Lakes

Through collaboration with camp partners (including Camp Sunshine, mycampsunshine.com), they make camp possible for thousands of kids with various illnesses, disabilities and challenges including: asthma, spina bifida, cancer, HIV, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, brain injuries, hemophilia, Tourette syndrome, autism, arthritis, visual impairments, developmental disabilities, sickle cell disease, celiac disease, Crohn’s and colitis, as well as kids in foster care, transplant recipients and kids who have lost a loved one- just to name a few. Camp Twin Lakes has programs year-round at its two overnight campsites, as well as in children’s hospitals and at other locations throughout Georgia.  They offer two camp facilities: Camp Rutledge in Rutledge, Georgia, 50 miles east of Atlanta and Camp Wil-A-Way located in Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia.

 

Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob’s Ladder is an SAIS-SACS Accredited Private School education children Pre-K through 12.  They also offer the Jacob’s Ladder Model of Intervention in the Therapy Center on an hourly basis.  Jacob’s Ladder utilizes brain-based methodology, incorporating targeted Neurodevelopmental interventions that create and strengthen a foundation for learning; this is combined with a vigorous academic program, always teaching from the individual student’s challenge point.  Jacob’s Ladder has a history of success serving children who have been diagnosed with: Autism Spectrum Disorders, PDD, Learning Disabilities, Language Delays, Delays unique to specific syndromes, ADHD, and Behavior Disorders.  The following services can be incorporated into the daily school program or accessed individually through the therapy center: Behavioral Services, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Openings, YMCA, Music Therapy, Therapeutic Yoga, Recreation Therapy, Brain Mapping, Neurofeedback, Therapeutic Listening Program, Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy, Individual Counseling, and Academic Tutoring.

Marcus Autism Center is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism and related disorders, treating approximately 4,000 children a year.  Marcus Autism Center offers services with the generous philanthropic support of community leaders and funding from local and state governments.   The Marcus Autism Center staff of highly trained pediatric professionals are supported by research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  With comprehensive services, families can receive diagnosis, treatment and support in a single location.  Treating patients across Georgia and the Southeast, Marcus Autism Center is the comprehensive resource for children with autism and related disorders.

Kids Enabled is a non-profit organization that serves as a resource for parents and professionals that address the issues and challenges that come from caring for and teaching children with learning differences.  Their website articles feature the latest therapies and interventions related to speech and language, gross and fine motor skills, nutrition and innovative teaching methods.

It is the Lindamood-Bell philosophy that everyone has the ability to reach their potential and that accurate diagnosis and relevant instruction enables that to happen.  The Lindamood-Bell programs develop: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  The Lindamood-Bell Learning Center’s sensory-cognitive programs stimulate the basic sensory functions related to learning by developing the underlying processes necessary for language and literacy success.  Many of our students have self-reported to us with at least one of the following prior diagnosis or labels: Dyslexia, Autism spectrum disorders, Hyperplexia, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder), ADD, ADHD, Auditory Processing Difficulties, Fragile X Syndrom, Gifted, CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia, NVLD (Nonverbal Learning Disorder), Sensory Integration Dysfuntion, Multiple Disorders, Down Syndrome, Strokes, Traumatic Brain Injury, Executive Function.

 

A Better Chance

Since 1963, A Better Chance has been opening the door to educational opportunities for thousands of young people of color in this nation.  Their mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.
